Jugs
Puzzle
jugs were a popular amusement in taverns since the Middle Ages
in England. One wonders quite why because the fairly simple nature
of the joke contained in drinking from the jug must have been
known to just about everyone who ever frequented a tavern.
The
idea was that the initiated, in drinking from the jug were aware
that they had to close off the hole under the handle and then
suck the beer up through the spout, thus avoiding the beer reaching
the pierced section around the neck.
The
uninitiated, seeing there was liquid inside, would have tried
to drink it by sucking through the spout but to no avail.
